For Early Years Leaders Navigating Uncertainty Right Now

Dear colleagues,

It has been a challenging time for us working in the early years sector. I commend each one of you as we continue to show up each day through the uncertainty.

This academic year, I stepped away from a role I had held for five years - a place that was stable, familiar, and comfortable, to take on the work of establishing a brand-new nursery group. I knew there would be challenges. Delays in fit-outs, shipping timelines for international resources, and recruitment pressure those are all part of opening a new provision.

What I could not have prepared for was navigating all of this against the backdrop of real global uncertainty. Particularly here in the UAE, where safety has always felt like a normal and reassuring part of daily life.

Opening a new nursery at this moment has been one of the most demanding leadership experiences I have faced. Hearing colleagues across the sector share their own worries, watching teams adjust quickly to changing realities, and seeing the very real impact on enrolment and staffing across settings has been deeply felt. I have a deeper appreciation & respect for the community who work in early years.

It was for this reason that I asked my friend Gaurav to write this piece.

His article, Early Years Leadership: Navigating the Tightrope with Strategic Assurance, speaks directly to what many leaders are quietly managing right now- the responsibility of sustaining teams, protecting quality, supporting families, and holding organisations steady when conditions feel uncertain.

It is thoughtful, practical, and grounded in the reality of leadership.

Most importantly, it reminds us that steady leadership during difficult periods is not about having all the answers - it is about maintaining clarity, perspective and direction for the people who rely on us.

I hope this article offers reassurance and strength to those of you currently walking that tightrope.
